Catholic Charismatic Renewal

The Catholic Charismatic Renewal was given by God to the Catholic Church. Through the renewal, the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit is manifested. In the renewal, we are asked to make a commitment to God and to surrender our entire lives to Him. By surrendering our lives to Him, we invite the Holy Spirit to be in control in our lives and allow God to work in us through His Holy Spirit.

Being ‘charismatic’ or in the renewal does not make a person more superior. The renewal consist of ordinary men and women who have live their lives ‘charismatically’ that is in the power of the Holy Spirit. This is not extraordinary since God’s grace through the Holy Spirit is freely given to all who are willing to accept it., and we were meant to live a Christian life with the power of the Holy Spirit.

Each Catholic Charismatic prayer group will have different dynamics and activities but all exist due to the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and are under the pastoral care of the Catholic Church. All prayer groups share in the desire to have their lives and the lives of others renewed. Through the renewal, an estimated 120 million lives have been changed through a personal experience of the Holy Spirit. It is a personal experience of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit who brings alive what we have already received in baptism and empowers us with His gifts for service and mission.

Baptism of the Holy Spirit
The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is the out-pouring of the Holy Spirit who is Lord and giver of life. It is a way of receiving the life that God has promised and the grace available to all of us. The power of the Holy Spirit which we received at confirmation is released through the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, hence enabling us to live the Christian life that we desire to live. The Holy Spirit will help us and we will begin to experience a new appreciation of Jesus, the Bible, our daily prayer life, the sacraments of the Church and our faith.

Charismatic Prayer Meetings
A "Charismatic Prayer Meeting" is a weekly gathering of Christians to give praise, thanks, honour, and love to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. It's a time we gather in community to build up each other and, to praise God on a one-to-one basis, as the Holy Spirit moves us. We come to give our full attention to Jesus -- through the help of the Holy Spirit, to be lost in His embrace and to surrender our hearts and time totally and fully to Him.

A prayer meeting usually consists of a time of praise and worship with singing, prophecy and tongues, prompted and guided by the Holy Spirit. It is not merely a sing-a-long but worship where music is used to give praise to our King. The ministering of the Gifts of the Spirit through prayer and intercession, testimonies, sharing and teaching are also important parts of the prayer meeting. The layout may vary depending on the group but the main focus is still the same – the Worship of our Lord and the empowering of His church.

The Gift of Tongues
The gift of tongues is a gift of the Spirit of praying without words. It enables the person who is praying to be able to concentrate fully on God and not worry about getting the right words. It is a very powerful gift for personal prayer and prayer ministry.

My Story
I had grown up in a Catholic environment all my life and I was happy the way things were, or so I thought. As I was growing up, I went through bouts of panic attacks, and even contemplated suicide. I had been hurt deeply yet I was running away from the one who could set me free if only I would let Him.

Through it all, God was watching over me. He had a plan for me that I was yet to discover. Through the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, and His Holy Spirit, He has changed my life and I know that life will never be the same again. As I slowly learnt to let Him take control, I learnt to run to the Lord and let Him fill me. He has filled my heart with love, joy and peace. The prayer group members continue to support me constantly on this journey of faith. Sunday masses were no longer a chore. I looked forward to every prayer meeting. Initially I was afraid of the gift of tongues and now, I don’t know where I would be without it. The beauty of this simple gift of prayer and praise has helped me in ways I cannot describe.

My journey has just started. I still fall and I sometimes I forget and I run away but then God reaches out and He reminds me constantly of How special I am to Him and guess what? So are you!! He has a great plan for you too. I can stand firm on the Father’s love that is so great that He sent His son to die for me, and the Holy Spirit to forever be my guide.

Come Experience When all is said and done, the only way to truly understand the power of the Holy Spirit is to experience it for yourselves. Each of us who have surrendered to God and allowed the Holy Spirit full control have a different story, a unique experience. We come from various backgrounds, some not so pretty but we rest assured in our Father’s love and forgiveness. Through baptism by water and the Holy Spirit, our lives have been changed and we will never be the same again.

Our heavenly father knows what is best for us and the Holy Spirit helps us to discover Him and be more like Jesus, in various different ways and at various different times. For some of us, the gift of tongues is instantaneous for others, it takes longer but all in the Father’s time. If you think your first meeting is uneventful, we encourage you to keep coming, keep seeking, keep desiring and allowing God to work in your lives. Keep praising, repenting and praying consistently, and you will soar with wings as eagles. You will stand firm against all that comes your way. You will experience His abundant love, and your hearts will be filled with unspeakable joy and a peace that this world cannot give. There is nothing to lose and everything to gain and we invite you for an experience that you will never regret. May God continue to work in your lives and bless you in all that you do.
